Two-Day Corporate 4WD

Comprehensive two-day corporate 4WD training for organisations whose employees operate on unsealed roads, off-road terrain or in demanding field environments, combining practical vehicle operation, terrain assessment, sand driving and recovery techniques.

Practical 4WD training for demanding work environments

Employees who operate four-wheel drive vehicles for work may be required to travel well beyond sealed roads, often in changing terrain and conditions where vehicle knowledge, judgement and appropriate technique become critical.

Roadcraft's Two-Day Corporate 4WD Course is designed for organisations requiring a more comprehensive level of practical four-wheel drive training for employees operating in field, regional or off-road environments.

The course develops low-risk 4WD techniques, vehicle knowledge, terrain assessment and recovery awareness through classroom education and extensive practical training across two days.

Training can be tailored to reflect the environments, vehicles and operational requirements of your organisation.

Day 1 – Vehicle capability and off-road technique

Day 1 is conducted at Roadcraft's purpose-built 40-hectare driver training facility near Gympie.

Participants develop an understanding of 4WD systems, vehicle setup, traction, terrain assessment, appropriate gear and drive-mode selection, vehicle positioning and the techniques required to safely negotiate difficult terrain.

Practical activities progressively expose participants to a range of surfaces and obstacles including:

  • steep ascents and descents
  • uneven and articulated terrain
  • mud and slippery surfaces
  • clay, rock and loose terrain
  • water crossings
  • moguls and other natural or constructed obstacles

The emphasis is on understanding vehicle capability and limitations, selecting an appropriate technique and maintaining control before a situation develops into an incident.

Day 2 – Sand driving and vehicle recovery

Day 2 commonly extends the training into the Cooloola Recreation Area, where participants apply the techniques developed on Day 1 in real-world beach and soft-sand conditions.

Training includes sand-driving techniques, tyre-pressure considerations, reading changing terrain, maintaining momentum, vehicle positioning and adapting driving techniques to changing surface conditions.

Participants are also introduced to practical vehicle recovery principles, including the safe use of common recovery equipment such as recovery tracks and snatch straps.

The purpose of recovery training is not simply to teach participants how to recover a bogged vehicle. It is to help them understand why vehicles become immobilised, how recovery risks can be controlled and how better planning and driving decisions can reduce the likelihood of recovery being required in the first place.

Training tailored to your organisation

Every organisation uses 4WD vehicles differently.

Roadcraft can tailor the course to reflect your vehicles, operating environment and identified risks. This may include employees working on unsealed roads, remote or regional tracks, construction or infrastructure sites, natural areas or other environments where conventional road-driving skills alone may not be sufficient.

Alternative Day 2 training may also be available using more difficult off-road terrain, with additional recovery or winching content incorporated where appropriate to the organisation's requirements.

Small-group practical training

Roadcraft maintains a maximum ratio of four participants per educator to maximise practical driving time, observation and individual feedback.

Courses can generally accommodate up to eight participants, with two participants per vehicle being the preferred arrangement.

The aim is not simply to make participants more confident in a 4WD. It is to develop safer, more aware, and more attentive drivers who better understand their vehicle, the terrain and the consequences of the decisions they make.

Accredited training is also available.
